We took a break from writing in Reading Logs today. Silent Reading did take place, however.
We started the lesson with a look at a song called "Daddy's Hands" by Holly Dunn that exemplifies, very well, how Sense Data (using hands) can tell a detailed story. The song and lyrics are attached, via youtube, below.
We reviewed SENSE DATA in relation to the 5 senses. From there, we discussed how IMAGERY (aka Poetic Device) also lends itself to Sense Data. After listening to the song, we examined John Prine's lyrics for "Big Old Goofy World" and found examples of Simile, Metaphor and Personification. We also talked about Onomatopoeia and how as a device, it in particular related to what we HEAR.
Some of us started to read (together) through Narrative Analysis & Writing Technique #1 to better understand what it is and how it can be used, effectively, in constructing narrative. A comparison study is included on this handout. If you were absent, please read this before next class so you can be up to speed with everyone else. It is attached to yesterday's homework blog post.
