Today we did a reading exercise. The subject of the reading was Remembrance Day. A copy of this reading can be found, below, in a previous blog post. The students also have a hard copy of this reading in their duo-tangs.
Students took turns reading. Later, I read so that students could hear how to pronounce new/difficult words.
We used various methods to understand what we were reading WITHOUT having to refer to a dictionary.
We talked about and used:
similarities - similitudes
word families - les mots de famille
word friends - les mots amis
connections - les connexions( making connections to other words and things we have learned elsewhere)
Context Clues - Les Indices du context ( I also referred to these as "Filling in the Blanks" or Wheel of Fortune" method ( F.I.T B or WOF) :o)
Attached below are some comprehension questions we looked at together. Students did similar comprehension reading and writing last year when we studied Le Mardi GRas so these reading and writing skills are review. I modeled how to answer the first question. The students were to finish the comprehension questions on their own. Those who did not finish were asked to complete the questions for homework. Students have a copy of the reading and the questions in their duo-tangs. They can also be found, as attached, below.
Finish the Comprehension Questions based on the Reading "Jour du Souvenir"
Remember, you must use complete sentences.
