A) Today, we started class with an oral quiz to review students knowledge about the rules that one can use to help determine if a noun is feminine. In particular, the following:
90% of the time, nouns that end with the following suffixes( word endings) are feminine and use the articles la or une:
However, there are some (common) exceptions and additional rules :
FEMININE (la/une) if it also ends in :
SION la télévision, la vision, la nation, une émission
TION la solution, la natation, l’équitation (riding), la position
ÇON la leçon, la façon (manner, way) MAIS PAS le maçon
TÉ la santé (health), l’électricité, la vérité (truth)
O la météo (weather), la Loto, une auto, la radio, la moto (moped) MAIS PAS
le kilo, le cacao, le vélo, le piano
la main (hand), la couleur, une opinion, la dent (tooth), la souris (mouse), la table, la caméra, la mer (sea), la tour (tower), une fois (once/times), la nuit (night), la fleur (flower), l’eau (water), la peau (skin), la maman, la sœur, une horreur (horror),
la forêt (forest), la fin (end), la boisson (drink), la maison, la prison, la paix (peace)
la peur (fear), la mort (death), la dent
B) Students were asked to work on a worksheet and use the rules regarding m,asculine and feminine word endings to familiarise themselves with what articles to use, le or la
C) It is suggested that students keep these sheets and ALWAYS refer to them when writing good copies of projects, stories or any other evaluated work whether it be for French, Science, Social Studies, etc.
D) Students were informed that instead of doing the exit pass in today`s class, we would instead complete this short evaluation in class, tomorrow.
